Central American Youth Football Tournament Underway
The UNCAF U-16 FIFA Forward Championship officially began today, October 1, 2025, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. This significant youth football event will run until October 8, 2025, bringing together eight national youth teams from across Central America and an invited guest nation. The tournament is hosted at the Centro Deportivo Ernesto Villa Alfonso, located on the road to San José Pinula.
Participating Nations and Tournament Structure
The eight participating teams have been divided into two groups for the initial phase of the competition:
- Group A: Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, and Cuba
- Group B: Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and Belize
Each team will compete in three group stage matches. Following the group stage, the top teams from each group will advance to the final, while the second-place teams will vie for third place. The championship final is scheduled for October 8 at 12:00 md (noon).
Pathway to the FIFA U-17 World Cup
This tournament holds particular importance as it serves as a vital preparatory stage for the CONCACAF U-17 Men's Qualifiers, leading to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026. FIFA has recently announced that the U-17 World Cups for men will be held annually in Qatar from 2025 to 2029, underscoring the increased significance of youth development competitions like this one.
FIFA Forward Program's Role in Development
The championship is part of the broader FIFA Forward program, an initiative designed to foster football development globally. Through this program, regional associations such as the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) receive funding to organize regional competitions for men, women, and youth teams. This support aims to enhance the quality and opportunities for young players within the region. Guatemala has a history of success in these tournaments, having won the U-16 UNCAF FIFA Forward tournament in 2024.

Annual U-17 World Cup in Qatar? Seems unsustainable and tone-deaf.

While the FIFA Forward program undeniably provides crucial funding for regional competitions, I wonder about the long-term impact on local leagues and sustained infrastructure improvements beyond these events. We need more than just tournaments.

Too much pressure on these kids at such a young age.

Inviting Cuba feels a bit random for a UNCAF tournament.
