Historic Cultural Exchange Commences in Tokyo
Tokyo became the focal point of a significant two-day cultural exchange event between Japan and South Korea, which began on Saturday, September 27, 2025. The event was organized to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two East Asian nations. Officials from both countries highlighted the importance of fostering deeper ties and promoting understanding, particularly among younger generations.
Emphasizing Cooperation and Future Relations
During the opening ceremony, Kim Jang-hyun, Deputy Chief of the South Korean Embassy in Japan, underscored the ongoing efforts to promote cooperative relations. He expressed hope for increased exchanges involving younger generations, who are seen as crucial for shaping future bilateral relations. Japanese education minister Toshiko Abe echoed these sentiments, conveying her hopes for deeper connections between Japan and South Korea.
Diverse Program Showcases Shared Heritage
The cultural exchange featured a variety of activities designed to celebrate the shared heritage and contemporary culture of both nations. A notable highlight was the reproduction of a procession of a Korean diplomatic delegation to Japan, dating back to the 17th to 19th centuries. The event also included performances of traditional musical instruments and dynamic K-pop dance performances, showcasing the breadth of cultural expression.
Among the participants was Shin Yoon-chan, the mother of Lee Soo-hyun, a South Korean man who tragically died in 2001 while attempting to rescue a Japanese man on train tracks in Tokyo. Shin Yoon-chan joined the procession, playing the role of the chief of the delegation, and delivered a letter advocating for the maintenance of peaceful relations between the two countries. Keiko Nabeta, a company worker from Shizuoka, emphasized the essential nature of friendship between Japan and South Korea, stating, 'I hope that both governments will work together in a good way.'
A Milestone in Bilateral Diplomacy
The 60th anniversary marks a significant milestone since the signing of the Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea on June 22, 1965, which normalized diplomatic ties. This cultural event serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation, building upon decades of complex relations.

It's encouraging to see figures like Shin Yoon-chan participate, symbolizing hope, but true peace requires both sides to honestly confront and learn from their difficult shared past, not just celebrate the present.

Don't forget the comfort women issue. A cultural show won't erase that pain.

60 years, yet apologies for past wrongs are still not fully accepted by all.
