Former Reform UK Wales Leader Admits Bribery Charges
Nathan Gill, the former leader of the Reform UK party in Wales and a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP), has pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery. The 52-year-old, from Anglesey, North Wales, admitted to accepting financial advantages from a pro-Russian politician to promote narratives favorable to Russia concerning events in Ukraine. The plea was entered at the Old Bailey in London on Friday, September 26, 2025.
The charges relate to payments Gill received between December 6, 2018, and July 18, 2019, during his tenure as an MEP for Wales.
Details of the Bribery Scheme
The court heard that Gill was tasked by Oleg Voloshyn, a Ukrainian politician with alleged ties to Russian interests, to make specific statements and engage in activities that would benefit Russia. These activities included:
- Making pro-Russian statements in the European Parliament.
- Writing opinion pieces for news outlets, such as 112 Ukraine, that supported a pro-Russian narrative.
- Posing questions for parliamentary consideration.
- Contacting senior officials of the European Commission.
- Arranging events.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The bribery allegations came to light after Gill was stopped at Manchester Airport on September 13, 2021, under the Counter Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019. His electronic devices were seized, revealing WhatsApp messages that detailed the agreement between Gill and Voloshyn to exchange money for his support of Russian narratives. Gill denied one additional charge of conspiracy to commit bribery, which the prosecution has decided not to pursue.
Sentencing and Political Background
Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, presiding over the case, described the matter as 'serious' and warned Gill that he faces a 'substantial jail sentence'. Sentencing has been scheduled for November 21, 2025, at the Old Bailey. Gill was granted conditional bail until that date.
Gill served as an MEP for Wales from 2014 to January 2020, initially with the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and later with the Brexit Party. He led Reform UK Wales from March to May 2021 before resigning from the party.

Unbelievable that an MEP would actively work against their own country's interests.

This is why nobody trusts politicians. Corrupt to the core.

The confirmed bribery is a serious blow to public trust and highlights the dangers of undisclosed foreign funding in politics. However, it's also important to avoid broad generalizations about all politicians or parties based on one individual's actions.

His actions are indefensible and warrant severe punishment, yet it's crucial that the investigation doesn't stop here. We should be looking at who else might have been involved or influenced by similar pro-Russian schemes.

While Gill's guilty plea is a necessary step for accountability, this incident underscores the pervasive problem of foreign interference in our democracies. Stronger preventative measures are clearly needed across the board.

Reform UK needs to seriously clean house if this is the kind of person they promote.

Traitors like him deserve everything they get. Good riddance.
