Preparations Underway for Presidential Visit
The Japanese and U.S. governments are currently arranging a trip for U.S. President Donald Trump to Japan in late October 2025. This visit would mark President Trump's first to Japan since commencing his second term in office. Japanese government sources confirmed the ongoing preparations on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
The planned visit is set to occur before President Trump's attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled to take place in Gyeongju, South Korea, from October 31 to November 1.
Meeting with New Japanese Leadership Expected
A significant aspect of the upcoming trip is the anticipated meeting between President Trump and Japan's new Prime Minister. Current Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is slated to leave office in October, with a successor expected to be chosen through a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership contest on October 4, followed by a parliamentary vote for the next prime minister in mid-October or later.
Prime Minister Ishiba had previously extended an invitation for President Trump to visit Japan during his trip to the United States in February. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, while declining to provide specific details on the visit, emphasized that 'The importance of the Japan-U.S. alliance as a cornerstone of Japan's diplomatic and security policies will not change.'
Agenda and Broader Asian Engagements
Discussions during the visit are expected to reaffirm the strong Japan-U.S. alliance, a critical component of both nations' foreign and security policies. Topics may also include ongoing trade issues, such as Japanese investments in U.S. industries, which Tokyo had previously pledged to boost as part of a trade deal.
President Trump is also scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit in South Korea. Additionally, he is expected to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 26 to 28.
During his first term, President Trump visited Japan multiple times, including in November 2017 and in May and June 2019, fostering a close relationship with then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

More rhetoric than substance. I doubt any real progress will be made.

Worried about stability with Trump's unpredictability and a new PM.

Important for regional stability and continued engagement with key allies.

Trade deals under Trump always favor the US too much. Japan should be wary.
