Historic Agreement Forged in New York
Togo and Kazakhstan have officially signed a reciprocal visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports. The landmark accord was formalized on September 24, 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) in New York. This agreement signifies a new chapter in the diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The agreement was signed by Robert Dussey, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Togolese Abroad of Togo, and Murat Nurtleu, who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan at the time of the signing. The 80th UN General Assembly commenced on September 9, 2025, with the high-level General Debate running from September 23 to September 29, 2025.
Deepening Bilateral Ties
The reciprocal visa exemption for diplomatic and service passport holders is expected to facilitate easier travel and enhance official exchanges between Lomé and Astana. Diplomatic relations between Togo and Kazakhstan were established over a decade ago, but saw a significant boost in 2023.
This advancement followed a visit by Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to Astana in November 2023, where he met with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. During that visit, both leaders expressed a mutual desire to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including political, commercial, economic, cultural, and humanitarian fronts.
Future Avenues for Cooperation
The newly signed visa exemption agreement is anticipated to open up promising avenues for collaboration in several key development sectors. Officials from both countries have highlighted potential areas for enhanced cooperation, including:
- Agriculture
- Food Security
- Education
- Transport
- Mining
- Digital Transformation
These sectors were previously identified during high-level discussions as areas where Togo and Kazakhstan could leverage their respective strengths for mutual benefit. The agreement underscores a shared commitment to fostering stronger partnerships and promoting development between the two geographically distant nations.

While the agreement is a positive step for diplomatic ties, its impact on broader economic or cultural exchange for regular citizens remains to be seen.

It's good to see countries seeking new partnerships, especially across continents, but the actual implementation of cooperation in these diverse sectors will be the real challenge.
