Russia Delivers MiG-29 Fighter Jets to Iran Amid Air Force Modernization Drive

Interim Boost for Iran's Air Force

The Islamic Republic of Iran has reportedly taken delivery of Russian MiG-29 fighter jets, marking a significant step in its efforts to modernize its long-outdated air force. Iranian lawmaker Abolfazl Zohrevand, a member of the country's parliament's national security committee, confirmed the arrival of these aircraft, stating they are currently stationed in Shiraz. The delivery is described as a 'short-term solution' to enhance Iran's aerial capabilities.

Iran's air fleet largely comprises American-made jets acquired before the 1979 revolution, alongside a limited number of older Russian and domestically modified platforms. The introduction of the MiG-29s, while not Russia's most advanced fighters, represents a notable upgrade for Iran's air force, which has faced vulnerabilities highlighted by recent regional tensions and conflicts.

MiG-29 Capabilities and Strategic Context

The MiG-29 is a twin-engine, fourth-generation fighter designed by the Soviet Union as an air superiority aircraft, also possessing ground attack capabilities. Known for its high maneuverability, the aircraft is equipped with a GSh-30-1 30mm autocannon and can carry up to 6500 kg of ordnance. Its maximum speed can reach approximately Mach 2.3. For Iran, these jets are intended to fill immediate gaps and sustain its frontline fighter numbers.

The urgency to bolster its air defense network comes after events such as 'Operation Rising Lion,' which reportedly exposed weaknesses in Iran's existing air force and defense systems. The new jets are seen as a signal of Iran's intent to rapidly modernize its aerial capabilities and enhance deterrence.

Anticipation of Su-35s and Broader Military Acquisitions

The delivery of the MiG-29s serves as a precursor to the expected arrival of more sophisticated aircraft. Zohrevand indicated that the more advanced Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets are 'on the way' and will serve as a 'long-term solution' for Iran's air force. The Su-35 is a 4.5-generation fighter, considered one of the most advanced in the world, boasting thrust-vectoring engines, extended range, and advanced radar systems. Iran has reportedly pursued the Su-35 since at least 2023, with some reports suggesting an order of 24 to 36 jets, or even up to 50.

Beyond fighter jets, Iran is also expanding its air defense capabilities through cooperation with Russia and China. Zohrevand stated that Iran will be acquiring Russia's S-400 air defense systems and China's HQ-9 air defense system 'in significant numbers.' This broader influx of military hardware underscores a deepening military cooperation between Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing, particularly as these nations face international sanctions and geopolitical realignments.
