High-Level Delegation Meets in Rabat
A high-level military delegation from Niger, led by its Chief of Staff, Major General Moussa Salaou Barmou, is currently on a working visit to Morocco from September 21 to 27, 2025. The delegation met with Lieutenant General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and Commander of the South Zone, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the FAR General Staff headquarters in Rabat. This significant meeting was held under the direct instructions of King Mohammed VI, underscoring the importance placed on bilateral relations by the Moroccan leadership.
Enhanced Areas of Military Collaboration
During their discussions, both military leaders lauded the 'exceptional quality' of the relations between their respective armed forces, emphasizing the 'strong fraternal ties and military cooperation marked by mutual respect'. The talks specifically aimed at reviewing and strengthening cooperation across several critical domains, including:
- Operational training and preparedness of forces
- Military healthcare initiatives
- Exchange of expertise and reciprocal visits between military personnel
Regional Security and Strategic Partnership
The visit comes at a crucial time, as countries in the Sahel region, including Niger, increasingly look to Morocco as a vital partner in addressing pressing security and sovereignty challenges. Morocco has actively intensified its efforts to contribute to regional stability and peacekeeping initiatives across the African continent. The Sahel continues to be a region of international concern due to ongoing conflicts, the persistent threat of terrorism, and organized crime, including human and drug trafficking. Morocco, recognized for possessing one of the most capable and modernized militaries in the region, continues to invest significantly in upgrading its defense capabilities. According to the Global Firepower 2025 report, Morocco ranks 59th out of 145 countries in global military strength, with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reporting a 2.6% increase in Morocco's military spending in 2024.
Commitment to Enduring Ties
The discussions between Lieutenant General Mohammed Berrid and Major General Moussa Salaou Barmou reaffirm the mutual commitment of Morocco and Niger to deepen their strategic partnership. This collaboration is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing security and stability not only for the two nations but also for the broader West African and Sahel regions.

Strengthening military capabilities is a sensible response to terrorism, yet true stability requires transparent governance and a focus on socio-economic growth alongside defense efforts.

Is this really about security, or just power projection? Skeptical.

While regional security is undeniably important given the threats in the Sahel, I hope this cooperation also includes initiatives for sustainable development to address root causes.

Morocco leading the way in regional security. Niger made a smart move.

The exchange of expertise is valuable for modernizing armed forces, however, long-term peace in the Sahel depends more on diplomatic solutions and addressing poverty than on military strength alone.
