Two Young Lives Lost in Brivio
A tragic incident in Brivio, in the province of Lecco, Italy, has resulted in the deaths of two 21-year-old women, Milena Marangon and Giorgia Cagliani. The friends were fatally struck by a vehicle on the evening of Saturday, September 20, 2025, while walking to a local festival. A third friend, aged 20, who was with them, miraculously survived the impact but was found in a state of shock.
The community of Brivio and Paderno d'Adda, where the victims resided, has been deeply affected by the news. Federico Airoldi, the mayor of Brivio, has declared two days of city mourning and canceled all planned festival events in a mark of respect and solidarity with the families.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The accident occurred around 10:00 PM on Via per Airuno, a provincial road known for being narrow and poorly lit, lacking a sidewalk in the area where the incident took place. Milena Marangon and Giorgia Cagliani, along with their surviving friend, had just parked their car near a municipal gym and were proceeding on foot, walking in single file along the roadside, towards the 'festa del paese' where a concert was underway.
According to initial reconstructions, the vehicle, described as a van or car, first collided with a parked car before veering and hitting the three young women from behind. The impact was devastating, leading to the immediate death of one victim and the other succumbing shortly after, despite the prompt arrival of emergency services.
Driver Arrested and Investigation Underway
The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision has been identified as a 34-year-old man of Polish origin. He was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide ('omicidio stradale') following the incident. Initial tests revealed that while he was negative for alcohol, he tested positive for narcotics. He is currently being held in prison in Pescarenico.
The Carabinieri of Merate are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the precise causes and dynamics of the accident. Hypotheses suggest that the driver might have attempted to avoid another vehicle before the fatal impact.
Community Mourns Loss
The sudden loss of Milena Marangon and Giorgia Cagliani has sent shockwaves through their communities. Both 21-year-olds were university students; Giorgia Cagliani, a political science student in Milan, was also a volleyball player who had played for 'Dream Volley Lesmo' and Besana. Friends and acquaintances have shared numerous messages of condolences and remembrance on social media, highlighting the profound grief felt for the two lives cut short.

It's devastating to see young lives cut short, and the community's grief is palpable. However, beyond mourning, this incident should prompt a critical review of pedestrian infrastructure in similar areas.

While the driver's actions are reprehensible, we must also consider why a main road to a festival lacked basic pedestrian safety features like sidewalks. Prevention is as important as punishment.

This tragedy must spark real change in road safety.
