The accident occurred around 10:00 PM on Via per Airuno, a provincial road known for being narrow and poorly lit, lacking a sidewalk in the area where the incident took place. Milena Marangon and Giorgia Cagliani, along with their surviving friend, had just parked their car near a municipal gym and were proceeding on foot, walking in single file along the roadside, towards the 'festa del paese' where a concert was underway.

According to initial reconstructions, the vehicle, described as a van or car, first collided with a parked car before veering and hitting the three young women from behind. The impact was devastating, leading to the immediate death of one victim and the other succumbing shortly after, despite the prompt arrival of emergency services.

Driver Arrested and Investigation Underway

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision has been identified as a 34-year-old man of Polish origin. He was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide ('omicidio stradale') following the incident. Initial tests revealed that while he was negative for alcohol, he tested positive for narcotics. He is currently being held in prison in Pescarenico.

The Carabinieri of Merate are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the precise causes and dynamics of the accident. Hypotheses suggest that the driver might have attempted to avoid another vehicle before the fatal impact.
