Jetstar Launches Record-Breaking Trans-Tasman and Domestic Expansion
Jetstar has announced its 'single-biggest expansion ever' of its New Zealand and trans-Tasman network, introducing two new routes and significantly increasing capacity on five of its busiest existing services. This substantial growth will add more than 660,000 new seats annually, aiming to provide more affordable travel options and boost tourism between Australia and New Zealand.
The expansion, detailed in announcements made in September 2025, reflects a strategic response to increasing travel demand and a commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.
New Routes and Increased Frequencies
The expansion includes the launch of two new direct routes:
- A seasonal service connecting Brisbane, Australia, with Queenstown, New Zealand, operating three times a week from June to October 2026. This route is expected to cater to the winter travel period.
- New daily flights between Hamilton and Christchurch in New Zealand, commencing on December 1, 2025. This domestic route will add approximately 135,000 new seats annually between the Waikato and Canterbury regions.
In addition to these new connections, Jetstar is boosting capacity on five key existing routes, adding close to 500,000 extra seats each year.
- The Auckland to Christchurch route will increase from up to eight daily flights to as many as 11 daily, adding 290,000 seats annually.
- Flights between Auckland and Brisbane will increase from 10 per week to twice daily, creating an additional 99,000 seats per year.
- The Auckland to Sydney route will see an increase from eight to 12 services a week, adding around 79,000 seats annually.
- Services from Christchurch to Melbourne will now operate daily year-round, resulting in 26,000 extra seats annually.
- Between Auckland and Dunedin, flights will increase from seven to 10 per week during the period from October 26, 2025, to May 17, 2026, providing 24,000 additional seats per year.
Strategic Impact and Fleet Additions
Jetstar Group CEO Stephanie Tully stated that the expansion comes at a time of soaring travel demand and a need for more affordable travel options. The airline estimates that this expansion could attract up to 70,000 extra Australian visitors, potentially generating approximately $190 million in economic benefit for the Auckland and wider New Zealand economy.
To support the increased flying, Jetstar will base an additional Airbus A320 aircraft in Auckland, expanding its New Zealand fleet to nine aircraft. This move will lift Jetstar's total New Zealand domestic capacity by 18 percent and trans-Tasman capacity by 14 percent. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston praised the announcement, noting that the new services align with the government's broader goals for strengthening airline connectivity.
Enhanced Connectivity and Future Outlook
The increased capacity is also expected to improve international connections for travelers. Double daily Auckland–Brisbane services will allow passengers to link through to destinations like Osaka, Tokyo, Seoul, and Bangkok, while Christchurch–Melbourne flights will connect to Singapore, Bali, and Ho Chi Minh City. This significant investment underscores Jetstar's role in facilitating travel and supporting the tourism industries across the region.

Boosting regional connectivity is so important. Hamilton-Christchurch daily is brilliant.

While the economic boost from tourism is welcome, we need to ensure our infrastructure can handle the increased visitor numbers without impacting local quality of life.

Expanding routes certainly offers more choice, but the focus on low-cost travel might shift the type of tourist arriving, potentially affecting the overall tourism experience.

More planes in the sky means more emissions. What about the environmental cost?
