22nd China-ASEAN Expo Opens in Nanning, Highlighting Digital Intelligence and FTA 3.0 Opportunities

Grand Opening in Nanning

The 22nd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (CABIS) officially opened on September 17, 2025, in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. The five-day event, scheduled to conclude on September 21, 2025, serves as a pivotal platform for promoting regional trade, investment, and cooperation between China and the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The overarching theme for this year's expo is 'Digital Intelligence and Innovation Empower Development – Leveraging China-ASEAN FTA 3.0 New Opportunities for an Even Closer China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future.' This theme underscores the evolving landscape of economic collaboration, with a strong focus on advanced technologies and enhanced trade agreements.

Focus on Digital Intelligence and CAFTA 3.0

A significant highlight of the 22nd CAEXPO is the unprecedented emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI). For the first time in its history, the expo features a dedicated 10,000-square-meter AI hall, showcasing nearly 200 leading AI companies and innovative teams. The event also hosted the inaugural China-ASEAN Artificial Intelligence Ministerial Forum, where officials from China and ASEAN countries convened to discuss AI policies, ethics, industry standards, and data security. Nanning is actively developing the 'China-ASEAN AI Innovation and Cooperation Center,' aiming to be a key hub for Chinese AI enterprises expanding into the ASEAN market.

Another central pillar of the expo is the advancement of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) 3.0. Negotiations for this upgrade concluded in May, with a formal signing anticipated in October. The CAFTA 3.0 aims to expand cooperation into forward-looking areas such as the digital economy, green economy, and supply chain connectivity, building upon the foundations of CAFTA 1.0 (focused on trade liberalization in goods) and CAFTA 2.0 (expanded market access).

Exhibition Scope and Economic Impact

The expo spans an impressive exhibition space of nearly 160,000 square meters and has attracted more than 3,200 companies from 60 countries. Key thematic areas include:

  • Investment cooperation and service trade
  • Strategic emerging industries
  • Cross-border cultural exchange
  • Green building materials and intelligent home technologies
  • Advanced manufacturing and smart equipment
  • Low-altitude economy and commercial aerospace
Myanmar serves as the theme country for this year's expo, with Sri Lanka participating as a special partner. The event also includes a 'Green and Low-Carbon Exhibition,' showcasing over a hundred products and more than 70 breakthrough technologies in environmental protection.

The CAEXPO continues to underscore the robust economic ties between China and ASEAN. China has maintained its position as ASEAN's largest trade partner for 16 consecutive years, while ASEAN has been China's largest trade partner for the past five years. From January to July 2025, bilateral trade between the two sides reached $597 billion, marking an 8.2 percent increase year-on-year. Two-way investment between ASEAN and China exceeded $450 billion by the end of July 2025. The expo is seen as a crucial platform for strengthening the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

A 'shared future' often means China's future, not truly equitable.

CAFTA 3.0 offers exciting new avenues for collaboration, though transparency in its implementation is key to avoiding imbalances and ensuring fair labor practices across the entire supply chain.

While increased trade and investment are positive for development, ASEAN countries must maintain strong regulatory frameworks to prevent market dumping and protect their emerging domestic industries from overwhelming competition.

It's good to see environmental initiatives highlighted, but the sheer volume of cross-border trade and industrial activity demands even more stringent environmental protections and sustainable resource management strategies.
