Belgium Engages at 80th UN General Assembly
A high-level Belgian delegation, headed by Prime Minister Bart De Wever, is participating in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) in New York City. The session, which commenced on September 9, 2025, and features its high-level General Debate from September 23-27, 2025, serves as a crucial platform for global diplomacy. Belgium's engagement focuses on pressing international issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, continued support for Ukraine, and upholding the integrity of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Focus on Humanitarian Aid for Gaza
Belgium has demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The country has actively participated in multinational efforts to deliver aid, including airdrops of medical supplies and food. In July 2025, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced Belgium's participation in a Jordan-coordinated operation, with a Belgian plane carrying approximately €600,000 worth of aid. Subsequent operations in August 2025 saw Belgian military aircraft drop 15 tonnes and then 16 tonnes of humanitarian supplies as part of 'Cerulean Skies 2'. Belgian officials consistently emphasize that while airdrops are a necessary first step, urgent land access for aid delivery is paramount. Furthermore, Prime Minister Bart De Wever has stated Belgium's intent to support all European Union sanctions against Israel to exert pressure and has reaffirmed support for a two-state solution. Belgium also plans to recognize Palestinian statehood at the UNGA and impose 12 'firm sanctions' on Israel, including a ban on products from settlements.
Steadfast Support for Ukraine
Belgium continues to be a resolute supporter of Ukraine and its people. Since February 2022, Belgium has provided substantial military and civilian assistance, amounting to €2.2 billion. This includes €412 million for military equipment and ammunition, alongside long-term commitments to develop Ukraine's armed forces. Humanitarian aid contributions include €63 million channeled through various UN agencies, €20 million for the 'Grain from Ukraine' initiative, and significant funds allocated for reconstruction, energy infrastructure, and mine clearance efforts. Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has reiterated Belgium's stance that Russia must be held accountable for its aggression and that Brussels supports Ukraine's legitimate defense, emphasizing Belgium's commitment to Ukraine's European integration.
Protecting the International Criminal Court
The protection and independence of the International Criminal Court (ICC) remain a key priority for Belgium. As a long-standing advocate, Belgium views the ICC as a 'cornerstone' of the rules-based international order, essential for combating impunity for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and crimes of aggression. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has voiced strong opposition to US sanctions against the ICC, advocating for the activation of the EU's blocking statute to shield the court from external pressures. Belgium has also coordinated a declaration of support for the ICC, signed by 93 of the 124 States Parties to the Rome Statute. However, Prime Minister Bart De Wever indicated in April 2025 that Belgium would likely not enforce an ICC arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited Brussels, marking a notable shift in policy from the previous government.

Belgium's steadfast support for Ukraine is a clear message against aggression, yet the long-term financial commitment raises questions about sustainable funding and the impact on national budgets, especially with so many other global crises.

While Belgium's humanitarian efforts in Gaza are commendable, the decision to impose sanctions and recognize Palestinian statehood is a significant geopolitical move with unpredictable consequences for regional stability.

Recognizing Palestinian statehood is a powerful symbolic gesture, but without a clear path to a negotiated two-state solution, it risks becoming an empty declaration. True peace requires complex diplomacy from all sides.
