Prime Minister Modi to Unveil Landmark Cruise Terminal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the state-of-the-art Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Ballard Pier, Indira Dock, in Mumbai on September 20, 2025. This event is a pivotal moment for India's maritime infrastructure and its ambition to become a global cruise tourism hub. While cruise operations at the MICT had already commenced on April 21, 2025, following a flag-off by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Prime Minister's inauguration signifies a formal and high-profile launch of the facility.
Advanced Features and Capacity
The MICT, developed under the 'Cruise Bharat Mission,' stands as India's largest international cruise terminal. It represents a substantial investment of ₹556 crore and spans an expansive area of over 415,000 square feet.
Key features and capacities of the terminal include:
- Annual passenger capacity: Up to 1 million passengers (approximately 10,000 passengers per day).
- Simultaneous ship accommodation: Up to five cruise ships.
- Ship dimensions: Capable of handling vessels up to 300 meters in length with an 11-meter draft.
- Passenger processing: Equipped with 72 check-in and immigration counters for efficient and hassle-free travel.
- Amenities: Features include a wavy ceiling, rose gold accents, a heritage-style façade, 22 elevators, 10 escalators, and multi-level parking for over 300 vehicles.
- Commercial spaces: Upper floors are designed to house sea-view cafes, retail stores, dining zones, and leisure areas, aiming to create a vibrant tourism and lifestyle hub.
Boosting India's Maritime Tourism and Economy
The MICT project is a significant component of the Indian government's broader 'Cruise Bharat Mission,' which aims to transform India into a premier global cruise destination. Developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA), JM Baxi & Co, and Ballard Pier Port Pvt Ltd, the terminal is expected to significantly boost regional economic activity and employment across various sectors, including hospitality, transport, and retail.
Broader Maritime Development Initiatives
The inauguration of the MICT is part of a larger push by the Prime Minister to strengthen India's maritime infrastructure. On the same day, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to visit Gujarat to participate in the 'Samudra se Samriddhi' event in Bhavnagar. During this visit, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects related to the maritime sector, collectively valued at over ₹7,870 crore. These projects include new container terminals and cargo handling facilities at various major ports across India, further underscoring the nation's commitment to enhancing its coastal and port capabilities.

While the new terminal is impressive and could boost tourism, we need strong environmental regulations to mitigate the impact of increased cruise traffic on our coasts.

It's good to see infrastructure development and job creation, but I hope the benefits extend beyond just the tourism sector and reach local communities.

Developing world-class maritime facilities is commendable for economic growth. Still, it's crucial to balance this with urban planning challenges and ensure Mumbai's existing infrastructure can handle the influx.
