Early-Stage Skin Cancer Detected
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, has been diagnosed with early-stage skin cancer, his medical team announced on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. The diagnosis followed tests on skin lesions removed over the weekend. According to his doctor, Claudio Birolini, two of the lesions tested positive for squamous cell carcinoma, an early form of skin cancer.
Dr. Birolini described the cancer as an 'intermediate' form, noting that while it is not the most aggressive, it 'can have more serious consequences.' However, he also stated that the extirpation (removal) of the lesions is considered a cure, and no further treatment is currently required.
Hospitalization and Treatment
The diagnosis was made public after Bolsonaro was discharged from DF Star Hospital in Brasilia, where he had been admitted for separate medical issues. He was initially hospitalized on Sunday for the removal of eight skin lesions, two of which later confirmed the cancer diagnosis. He was then admitted again on Tuesday due to symptoms including vomiting, dizziness, and low blood pressure, and was discharged on Wednesday.
A medical bulletin from DF Star Hospital indicated that Bolsonaro arrived 'dehydrated, with elevated heart rate and a drop in blood pressure.' Examinations also revealed 'persistent anaemia and impaired kidney function.' Doctors emphasized the need for regular monitoring 'to ensure no new lesions appear and that the removals were complete.'
Context of Ongoing Legal and Health Challenges
This health development comes amidst significant legal challenges for the former president. Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest after being convicted last week of plotting a coup following his loss in the 2022 presidential election. He was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison, a verdict his lawyers intend to appeal.
Bolsonaro's health has been a recurring concern since he was stabbed during his 2018 presidential campaign, leading to multiple surgeries and ongoing digestive issues. His eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, expressed optimism regarding his father's recovery, stating, 'My father has already fought tougher battles and won. This one won't be any different.'

It's never good to hear someone has cancer, even if I disagree with his politics. But his legal situation is far more pressing for the country.

Good to hear he's recovering well. Health comes first.

Glad the doctors caught it early. Early detection saves lives.

His health is a personal matter, and I hope he gets well. But the focus should remain on upholding democracy and ensuring accountability for those who threaten it.

Good that the cancer was caught early and treated. However, this news feels like a distraction from the very serious coup conviction he just received.
