Spain Promotes Gastronomy in Key Chinese Cities
Spain has officially launched its extensive culinary marketing campaign, 'Eat Spain Drink Spain' (ESDS), across various cities in China. Scheduled to run from September 13th to 26th, the initiative seeks to immerse Chinese consumers and trade partners in the rich flavors and traditions of Spanish cuisine and beverages. The campaign is a collaborative effort by Foods and Wines from Spain and #alimentosdespaña, forming a key part of the broader Spain Food Nation Campaign.
The ESDS campaign is making its debut in China, targeting major locations such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Ningbo, Chongqing, and Wuhan. Shanghai also played a significant role in the launch, hosting a summit to kick off the promotional activities.
Diverse Activities to Showcase Spanish Delights
The 'Eat Spain Drink Spain' campaign is designed to offer a comprehensive experience of Spanish gastronomy through a variety of events and promotions. These activities are being held in a wide array of venues, including gourmet food stores, supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants. Planned events include:
- Promotions and discounts on Spanish products
- Tasting events and workshops
- Wine pairing dinners and food tours
- Cooking shows and exclusive tastings
- Special weekend menus featuring Spanish ingredients
The campaign highlights a diverse range of Spanish specialties, from renowned wines like Rioja and Albariño to iconic food products such as Manchego cheese and jamón ibérico. Seafood is also a significant focus of the promotion.
Introducing 'Spanish Restaurant' Certification
A notable component of the campaign is the introduction of a new 'Spanish Restaurant' certification program in China. This scheme, spearheaded by ICEX Spain Export and Investment and the Spanish Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, aims to recognize and certify Chinese restaurants that consistently use authentic Spanish ingredients.
During a summit in Shanghai, Maria Naranjo, Director of Agrifoods at ICEX, presented certificates to 12 Chinese restaurant owners, marking them as the first to receive this prestigious certification. The program is intended to establish quality standards and guidelines, helping consumers identify high-quality Spanish cuisine and providing a model for restaurateurs globally.
Goals and Digital Engagement
The primary mission of the 'Eat Spain Drink Spain' campaign is to educate, inspire, and showcase the impressive variety and diversity of Spanish gastronomy, beverages, and flavors to the Chinese market. It also serves to boost the export of Spanish food products.

Showcasing a diverse range of products like Rioja and jamón ibérico is positive for variety. Yet, the price point of some of these premium items might limit their accessibility to a broad segment of the Chinese market.

The campaign's extensive activities across multiple cities demonstrate a strong commitment. Still, sustainability beyond the initial launch period will require continuous engagement and addressing potential supply chain complexities.

The certification program is genius. Ensures quality and trust for consumers.

This 'certification' sounds like gatekeeping. What about local interpretations?

Boosts exports and cultural exchange. A win-win for both countries.
