Nvidia Invests £500 Million in UK AI Firm Nscale, CEO Predicts 'AI Superpower' Status

Nvidia's Significant Investment in UK AI Infrastructure

Nvidia, the leading US AI chipmaker, has announced a substantial £500 million equity investment in Nscale, a British cloud computing firm. The announcement was made by Nvidia's co-founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, during a press conference in London on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. Huang concurrently declared his belief that the United Kingdom is poised to become an 'AI superpower'.

This investment is a key component of a broader initiative to significantly enhance the UK's artificial intelligence infrastructure. Nvidia, in collaboration with partners Nscale and CoreWeave, plans to invest up to £11 billion in UK AI factories. This ambitious project aims to deploy 120,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs into UK data centers by the end of 2026, marking what is described as the largest AI infrastructure rollout in the country's history.

Nscale's Role and Expansion Plans

Nscale, founded in 2024 and spun off from cryptocurrency mining firm Arkon Energy, specializes in providing AI cloud services across Europe. The company itself has committed to investing £2.5 billion into UK data center infrastructure over the next three years. The partnership with Nvidia is expected to enable Nscale to achieve revenues of up to £50 billion over the next six years, according to Huang.

A significant development includes a collaboration between Nscale and Microsoft to establish the UK's largest AI supercomputer at Nscale's AI Campus in Loughton, Essex. This facility is projected to initially house 23,040 Nvidia GB300 GPUs. Furthermore, Nscale, OpenAI, and Nvidia are jointly establishing 'Stargate UK', an initiative that will feature Blackwell Ultra GPUs operating in Nscale's UK data centers by 2026.

UK's Path to AI Superpower Status

Jensen Huang's prediction of the UK becoming an 'AI superpower' is rooted in the nation's strong academic foundations and innovative companies. He cited the UK's universities and homegrown firms such as DeepMind and Wayve as evidence of its immense potential. Huang remarked that the UK is 'too humble' and in a 'Goldilocks circumstance' for AI development, possessing an optimal balance of expertise and emerging opportunities.

The combined additional computing power from these investments is estimated to be approximately 100 times the performance of the UK's current fastest supercomputer, the Isambard AI supercomputer in Bristol. This surge in capacity is intended to support a new generation of UK researchers, developers, and entrepreneurs.

Broader Context and Future Outlook

The announcement coincides with a wider transatlantic technology and trade partnership, highlighted by President Donald Trump's state visit to the UK. This period has seen other major tech companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Salesforce, also pledge significant investments in UK AI infrastructure, collectively representing a substantial influx of foreign technology investment.

Despite the optimistic outlook, Huang acknowledged challenges, particularly the need to secure sufficient electricity to power the energy-intensive data factories. He also emphasized the importance for the UK to develop its own AI systems, stating, 'Every country should create its own AI… The data belongs to you. It belongs to your people. It's created by your people, your companies.'

While this investment is undoubtedly huge for UK's AI capabilities, the energy demands of these data centers are a serious concern that needs clear solutions.
