Dominican Republic's Ambassador Highlights Opportunities in Tourism and Trade with China

In an exclusive interview, Jose Julio Gomez Beato, the ambassador of the Dominican Republic to China, discussed the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) and its pivotal role in showcasing the successes of the services sector. He pointed out that this fair creates valuable opportunities for enhancing bilateral ties, particularly in tourism, trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.

Ambassador Gomez emphasized the importance of tourism to the Dominican economy, noting that Santo Domingo boasts a wealth of historical and cultural attractions, while Punta Cana is renowned for its stunning beaches and resort offerings. This combination creates a unique opportunity to strengthen tourism-related collaborations, with organizations like the World Tourism Cities Federation playing a key role.

He highlighted the increasing interest from Chinese tourists, with over 30,000 visiting the Dominican Republic last year. Recognizing the varied interests of Chinese travelers, the ambassador mentioned efforts to expand the country's tourism portfolio, noting that visitors seek diverse experiences beyond museums and beaches. Tourists can explore the colonial history in Santo Domingo, spend time on the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana or Samaná, and enjoy eco-tourism in the picturesque landscapes of the northwest.

Beyond the tourist sector, the ambassador pointed out the growing economic and trade relations between China and the Dominican Republic, particularly since they established diplomatic ties in 2018. He noted that China has emerged as the country's second-largest trade partner, with increasing investment from Chinese companies in the Dominican free trade zones and the potential for exporting cigars and agricultural products to the Chinese market.

Gomez also highlighted the favorable policies that the Dominican Republic offers to investors, including significant tax exemptions for hotel developments. Reflecting on his experiences in China, he remarked on the combination of rich historical culture and dynamic modernity in Beijing, as well as the rapid growth of cities like Shenzhen and Shanghai.

In a personal endeavor, the ambassador shared that he has begun learning Chinese, acknowledging the challenges of the language but expressing his determination to improve and eventually conduct interviews in Chinese. The CIFTIS event is ongoing and will continue until September 14.

Ambassadors always paint a rosy picture. I'd like to hear from critics of these partnerships.

Learning Chinese is great, but does that really change the economic dynamic? Seems a bit superficial.
