Basel Adra, a Palestinian director who received an Academy Award, disclosed that Israeli soldiers conducted a raid at his residence in the occupied West Bank on Saturday. During the search for Adra, soldiers interrogated his wife about his location and examined her phone while their 9-month-old daughter was present. Adra's family faced violence from Israeli settlers, resulting in injuries to his two brothers and one cousin, prompting him to take them to the hospital.
While at the medical facility, Adra received information that nine Israeli soldiers had invaded his home. Due to fears of detainment, he spent the night away from his village as the soldiers obstructed access. The Israeli military justified its presence in the area by claiming that it was responding to rock-throwing by Palestinians, resulting in injuries to two Israeli civilians, which Adra denied, asserting that Palestinians were not involved in any violence.
Additionally, videos shared by Adra’s cousin documented the assailants attacking his brother, Adam Adra, who suffered multiple injuries. In another clip, a settler could be seen pursuing a solidarity activist, culminating in physical aggression. Adra, who has spent years documenting settler violence in the Masafer Yatta region, recounted that these incidents have intensified since the recognition of his documentary, which addresses the struggles of local residents against Israeli military actions.
He characterized the day’s events as “horrific,” emphasizing that even mere documentation of settler activities invites military intervention. Another co-director of the film, Yuval Abraham, expressed deep concern for Adra, highlighting the recurrent pattern of settler violence followed by military aggression against Palestinians.
The documentary, "No Other Land," won the best documentary category at the Oscars and focuses on the fight of Masafer Yatta residents against the Israeli military's efforts to demolish their villages. Despite receiving international accolades, the film has sparked backlash in Israel. The settlement policy in the West Bank has long been deemed a significant barrier to the establishment of a Palestinian state, as settlements continue to expand amid an atmosphere of military control that affects the Arab population living there. In the backdrop of ongoing violence, both settler aggression and Palestinian attacks against Israelis have surged amidst the broader conflict.

This story lacks credibility. How can we trust someone who’s clearly biased towards a political agenda?

The violence is mutual, and focusing only on one side creates a false narrative.

It’s imperative that we support artists like Basel Adra who reveal the truth about settler violence.

It's easy to blame the military when you’re the one instigating trouble. The settlers are acting in self-defense.
