An analysis of Mayor Sadiq Khan's international travel over the past eight years indicates he has flown a substantial distance. The investigation revealed that Mr. Khan alone has traveled over 73,000 miles by air. When considering the accompanying staff, the total distance flown surpasses 473,000 miles. These flights have generated an estimated 43.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to approximately 19 trips around the Earth's equator. The Mayor's office has booked at least 70 seats on international flights, which is enough to fill a small aircraft. Some trips involved large entourages, such as an eight-person team accompanying Mr. Khan to New York for a climate conference.
Data collected from 2023 and 2024 shows Mr. Khan traveling with 23 staff members on four trips to New York, Rome, and Paris, with two of these trips related to climate events. Previous years included trips to India and Pakistan in 2017 with seven staff, costing nearly £21,000, and a 2016 trip to Canada and the USA with a team of seven, costing over £32,000. Analysts estimate that between 1,350 and 2,000 trees would need to be planted annually to offset the carbon produced by these journeys, which is comparable to half the annual carbon absorption of Hyde Park's trees. Mr. Khan has faced criticism for these trips, with opponents questioning the consistency of his overseas travel with his public stance on climate issues.
Mr. Khan has previously opposed expansions at Heathrow Airport, including the proposed third runway. He has stated his opposition to a new runway due to its potential impact on noise, air pollution, and climate change targets. He has also encouraged frequent air travelers to consider whether a journey is necessary and to choose the lowest carbon options when possible. Mr. Khan has consistently encouraged Londoners to reduce their carbon footprint and has implemented policies such as the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez).
A spokesperson for the Mayor of London stated that Mr. Khan has made fewer international visits by plane than his predecessor. The spokesperson emphasized that Mr. Khan is committed to promoting growth and generating new trade, investment, and cultural links for the capital. Records show that in 2023, Mr. Khan flew with five staff to New York for the UN Climate Ambitions Summit, totaling 41,500 air miles for the team. The following year, he took four staff to Rome for the “Climate Crisis to Climate Resilience” summit, totaling nearly 9,000 air miles. Calculations for the carbon footprint were made using a United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization emissions calculator. The Mayor's international travel highlights the challenge of balancing global representation with personal and municipal carbon reduction goals.

Time to get on the train! An embarrassment to London and to the people who rely on public transport.
