New research has identified the countries with the most congested roads globally. The study involved 12,015 drivers who rated the road traffic in various locations they visited. These ratings were then used to determine the rankings.
Albania secured the top spot with a score of 7.14 out of 10. The capital city, Tirana, experiences significant traffic congestion during peak hours, which may be exacerbated by parking restrictions. Montenegro followed closely in second place, scoring 7.12. While known for heavy traffic within its tunnel road network, the roads are reportedly well-maintained.
Morocco ranked third with a score of 6.91. Roads between major cities like Casablanca and Marrakech can become very busy during peak times. However, traffic tends to lessen when traveling to coastal cities such as Essaouira. Germany came in fourth with a score of 6.74. The country's famous autobahn network can experience congestion in certain areas, and some sections lack enforced speed limits. Turkey rounded out the top five, scoring 6.71. Roads in Istanbul are known to be busy during peak travel times, but traffic tends to ease when driving towards the southern coastal cities.
According to Aleksandrs Buraks, head of growth, the research aimed to identify locations with the most crowded roads. The findings provide valuable insights for travelers planning to rent a car abroad, helping them anticipate potential traffic issues. The study highlighted that Albania and Montenegro, popular tourist destinations, have some of the busiest roads. Despite the congestion, these countries offer stunning scenery and attractions for both locals and tourists. Travelers to the top 20 ranked locations are advised to plan their routes in advance to avoid traffic delays.

The study doesn't account for the time of year, holidays, or specific events. It's too generalized.

I find the statement that the article is an insight for tourists is off, you can figure out congestion with some basic data research.

Traffic is always relative. What one person finds 'congested', another might find 'normal'.
