Japan's F-15s Embark on Historic Global Mission to Strengthen Alliances

Defense Minister Gen Nakatani revealed plans for Air Self-Defense Force F-15 fighter jets to embark on a global mission, showcasing Japan's dedication to fostering stronger relationships with nations sharing similar values. The aircraft are scheduled to visit the United States, Canada, Britain, and Germany, with the journey spanning approximately two weeks, commencing on September 14th.

This marks a historic event, as ASDF fighter jets have never before flown to either Europe or Canada. The extended distances necessitate the deployment of four F-15s, accompanied by four additional aircraft, including a transport plane.

Minister Nakatani emphasized the interconnectedness of security across regions, stating that the dispatch serves to demonstrate the shared understanding that defense is a unified concern across Europe, the Atlantic, and the Indo-Pacific. While initial discussions considered joint training exercises during the jets' travels, the plan was ultimately dismissed due to concerns regarding unfamiliar training environments, particularly after such a lengthy flight.

General Hiroaki Uchikura, the highest-ranking military officer, highlighted the challenges and significance of the mission. He acknowledged the stress associated with flying to and landing in unfamiliar locations, emphasizing the extensive preparations required. However, he also underscored the profound importance of successfully completing the mission.

Japan's efforts to strengthen collaboration with NATO members are, in part, a response to China's military advancements. This commitment was recently demonstrated in August when the SDF provided cover for the weapons of a British aircraft carrier. The deployment of ASDF fighter jets is also seen as a reciprocal gesture, following the dispatch of Eurofighter jets to Japan by Britain and Germany.

A senior ASDF officer noted that the approval granted by Canada, Britain, and Germany for the F-15s to utilize their airspace symbolizes the deepening defense exchanges with NATO members. This is particularly significant given the jets' advanced attack capabilities, which typically lead nations to be hesitant about allowing them over their territory. A Defense Ministry source further added that this mission allows Japan to demonstrate its strengthened ties with Europe to the international community, including China.
