The upcoming Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) presidential election is anticipated to be a contest among five prominent figures. These include Toshimitsu Motegi, Yoshimasa Hayashi, Sanae Takaichi, Shinjiro Koizumi, and Takayuki Kobayashi. These individuals previously ran against the current Prime Minister in the prior year's election.
Shinjiro Koizumi, the current farm minister, is reportedly determined to participate in the LDP presidential election. The official commencement of the election is scheduled for September 22, with voting by party lawmakers set for October 4. Party members will also have the opportunity to vote. Koizumi, a member of the current cabinet, has been measured in his responses regarding the election.
Motegi, a former party secretary-general, is the only one who has formally declared his candidacy. Other potential candidates include Sanae Takaichi, a former economic security minister, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, and Takayuki Kobayashi, also a former economic security minister.
In the previous election, Takaichi was defeated by the current Prime Minister in the run-off, despite leading the initial round of voting. Koizumi secured the most votes from LDP lawmakers in the first round but ultimately placed third overall. Hayashi, Kobayashi, and Motegi finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in the initial round of voting.
Takaichi has been consulting with her supporters from the previous election to identify key issues. Other lawmakers are considering entering the race, but the LDP's recent electoral setbacks have weakened the party. This has made it more challenging to secure the necessary signatures for formal candidacy.

I hope they actually address the real concerns of the people, and not just internal party drama.

Another LDP election? Yawn. Same faces, different day.

So many former ministers... feels like groundhog day.

Consulting with supporters? Sounds vague and ineffective.
