On Friday, China's military voiced its disapproval of a U.S. and British warship's passage through the Taiwan Strait, a sensitive waterway. The People’s Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command reported that it deployed naval and air forces to monitor and issue warnings to the U.S. destroyer USS Higgins and the British frigate HMS Richmond. The command accused the ships of "trouble-making and provocation."
The Chinese military statement further asserted that the actions of the United States and Britain were sending the wrong signals and destabilizing peace in the Taiwan Strait. However, both the British and U.S. military offered differing perspectives. Britain's defense ministry characterized the passage as a routine operation, emphasizing its adherence to international law and the exercise of freedom of navigation rights.
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command echoed this view, stating that the ships had traversed a corridor in the strait outside any coastal state's territorial waters. The command underscored the importance of maintaining navigational rights and freedoms in the Taiwan Strait.
Adding to the day's events, China's navy announced that its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, which is still undergoing sea trials, had also passed through the strait. This follows a similar transit by a Canadian and an Australian warship the previous week.
The U.S. Navy, along with ships from allied nations such as Canada, Britain, and France, regularly transit the strait, approximately once a month. These countries, along with Taiwan, consider the strait an international waterway. However, China, which views Taiwan as its own territory, claims the strategic waterway as part of its territorial waters. Taiwan's government rejects these claims. Over the past five years, China has intensified its military pressure on the island, including conducting war games in the vicinity.

Thank you, United States and the United Kingdom for upholding freedom of navigation! Let us hope other countries join the chorus.

How can foreign countries behave as if the Taiwan Strait is their home?

The US and UK are clearly destabilizing the region. The Taiwan Strait is China's business. Stay out!

China’s claims are excessive and unfounded. The Taiwan Strait is an international waterway.

More Western meddling in Asian affairs. We've seen this movie before, and it never ends well.
