Nick Thomas-Symonds, the minister for EU relations, has stated his belief that the UK will not reverse Brexit and rejoin the European Union within his lifetime. His primary focus is on establishing a "new strategic partnership" with Brussels. This effort to strengthen ties between the UK and the EU has been a key objective for the Labour party since Sir Keir Starmer assumed leadership.
A significant step in this direction was the signing of a comprehensive reset deal in May. Sir Keir characterized this agreement as ushering in a "new era" and a "win-win" scenario for both parties. However, the deal faced criticism from Brexiteers who viewed it as a concession to Brussels.
When questioned about the possibility of reversing Brexit, Mr. Thomas-Symonds responded that he did not foresee it happening. He emphasized his commitment to building a closer and more constructive relationship, guided by the mandate from the 2024 general election. He reiterated his focus on building this new strategic partnership.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed Labour's commitment to not rejoining the single market or the customs union, nor reintroducing freedom of movement, stating that this position remains unchanged. The reset deal has drawn criticism, with some expressing concerns that it could lead to the indirect reintroduction of free movement. The deal included provisions such as allowing more British travelers to use e-gates, agreements on animal and plant product standards, and a new security and defense partnership. Specific aspects of the deal, such as a "youth experience scheme" and extended access for European fishing trawlers, have been met with particularly strong opposition. The improved UK-EU relations have also led to the launch of a pilot migrant return deal between the UK and France, with reports suggesting a similar agreement is close to being finalized with Germany.

This is not what Brexit was about. Let's keep our borders secure and our laws British!

I support the commitment to maintain control over our borders while finding common ground.
