The Secret Life and Love of Freddie Mercury." A friend who attended alerted me on Monday that she had contracted the virus. By Wednesday, a test confirmed my own infection.
This illness has forced the cancellation of important promotional events, although I am still managing interviews via Zoom. Yesterday's conversation with a Dutch journalist was memorable, as we both battled our symptoms. Today, I have a scheduled interview with someone in Brazil, but a bookshop talk and signing had to be called off. The news of my illness has mostly been met with indifference. COVID fatigue is prevalent. Even the pharmacy staff seem apathetic. The pharmacist, when my friend picked up tests for me, dismissed the situation, stating that the virus is widespread and weakened.
However, medical professionals are warning of a resurgence of the virus. A new, virulent strain was identified this summer, and international data indicates a concerning increase in cases. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests that another pandemic is not a matter of "if," but "when." When the SARS-Cov-2 virus first emerged, the world was unprepared. By August of last year, despite the belief of many that it has become less severe, the virus had claimed millions of lives. The death toll was significantly higher in poorer countries, and the global economy suffered.
We debated vaccines, masks, and school closures, and now many are weary of the topic. But the virus persists. My own deteriorating health is proof of this. Hospitalizations are also rising. The UK is facing a new wave of infections. Yet, the government is no longer offering vaccinations to certain vulnerable groups. This autumn, NHS vaccinations will be limited to specific groups.

The indifference is shocking. We shouldn't forget the lives lost.

I think the bookshop talk cancellation is a shame - the author is brave to speak out.

The government is right, we need to live our lives. Prioritise life again!
