A man has received a jail sentence for the sexual assault of a five-year-old girl, an incident that occurred more than ten years ago during a barbecue. The victim, now a young adult, disclosed the event last year after discussing it with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). At Liverpool Crown Court, the prosecutor, David Watson, recounted how the defendant entered his son’s bedroom, asked the girl for a cuddle, and then proceeded to slide his hand down her underwear. The victim recalled feeling confused and frozen during the incident, stating that she did not immediately recognize the wrongdoing of the act. Only years later did she come to understand its impact and began sharing her experience with close friends.
The girl's father noted significant changes in her behavior following the assault, particularly in her reluctance to engage in physical affection with male relatives. In a powerful victim impact statement, the mother shared how deeply the incident affected her daughter, leading to challenges in making friends and a deterioration of her mental health. She expressed her heartbreak over her daughter's struggles, including incidents of self-harm, which remained a mystery to the family until the girl felt comfortable sharing her history. The mother emphasized her pride in her daughter for bravely speaking out against the wrongdoing and vowed to support her in overcoming the trauma.
The defendant, identified as Wallace, who was in his 30s at the time, was defended by David Woods, who claimed Wallace was under the influence of drugs during the assault and had a blurry recollection of the events. Nonetheless, Wallace accepted responsibility and expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the victim's memory of the incident was likely clearer than his own. Although the defense sought to frame the assault as a brief event from years ago, the judge, Recorder Lasker, emphasized its lasting impact on the victim's life. He underscored society's condemnation of such offenses and imposed a 12-month prison sentence on Wallace to reflect the seriousness of his actions against an innocent child.

Sending strength and support to the victim and her family. Real justice for an innocent soul.

At least he accepted responsibility. A first step, however late, towards accountability.

Framing the assault as brief"? It's NEVER brief when you're dealing with a child.

I'm proud of the victim for speaking up. This is incredibly brave.

Under the influence of drugs" is NOT an excuse. He should get zero leniency.

This sentence isn't a deterrent. Other predators won't be scared.
