Initial video footage of the alleged killer, captured from a distance, was of poor quality and did not reveal his identity. This was acknowledged by Donald Trump in an interview.
However, the public release of the video, along with high-definition images of the suspect, proved crucial to the investigation. This release triggered a rapid series of events, culminating in the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson just three hours later. Authorities identified Robinson through a close relative, believed to be his father, who then confronted him and obtained a confession. The relative subsequently alerted a family friend, who turned Robinson in.
Experts noted that the release of the imagery significantly accelerated the investigation, which had appeared to stall initially. The former deputy director of the FBI stated that the release was designed to draw attention to the enhanced photographs, which allowed for public identification of the suspect.
FBI Director Kash Patel provided a timeline of the developments. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with state and local authorities in solving the case. Patel also mentioned that investigators received numerous tips, totaling 11,000 by Friday morning, and that each lead would be pursued.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox provided additional details, including an impassioned plea for young people to disengage from social media. While hesitant to directly link the video and photograph release to Robinson's arrest, Cox acknowledged the close temporal relationship between the events.
Reports indicated that the suspect's father, a veteran sheriff's deputy, informed his pastor of his son's confession, and the pastor then contacted authorities. Cox expressed gratitude to Robinson's family for their cooperation.
Investigators gathered information from family members and a roommate, painting a picture of a young man consumed by hatred for the victim. Evidence included messages shared on social media, detailing plans to retrieve a rifle. A Mauser model 98 firearm was recovered, wrapped in a towel.
The governor also revealed messages engraved on bullet casings found with the weapon. Surveillance footage from the university, showing Robinson's gray Dodge Challenger, and the suspect's changing of clothes, further aided in identifying him. Cox expressed gratitude for the swift collaborative efforts that led to the arrest and acknowledged the sadness of the event.
