The United Nations General Assembly has passed a decisive vote in support of a future Palestinian government free from Hamas influence, reflecting a diplomatic compromise. This agreement has prompted Arab nations to openly denounce Hamas's October attacks on Israel, in exchange for international recognition of a Palestinian state.
The assembly’s vote concluded with a tally of 142 in favor and 10 against, which included Israel and the United States. The vote endorsed the New York declaration, which advocates for a two-state solution originally crafted by France and Saudi Arabia. It includes some of the strongest criticisms of Hamas that the UN has ever articulated, clearly stating the condemnation of the group for its attacks on civilians and demanding that it release hostages.
This resolution is anticipated to lay the groundwork for an upcoming UN conference that will formalize the recognition of a Palestinian state by numerous countries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the idea of a Palestinian state altogether, despite the fact that a majority of UN member states have acknowledged Palestine's declared sovereignty.
Additionally, the declaration calls for Hamas to relinquish control of the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority and cooperates with international support for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state. It proposes the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission to provide security and support to both Palestine and Israel in light of the ongoing conflict.
In response, Hamas has stated it will only consider disarmament once an independent Palestinian state is recognized. Israeli representatives have dismissed the resolution as a mere political stunt, lacking genuine diplomatic intentions.
Meanwhile, Qatar's prime minister is seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding the recent Israeli strikes on Hamas figures in Qatar during a meeting with former President Donald Trump. In the backdrop, Qatar is preparing for an Arab-Islamic summit aimed at formulating a collective response to Israel's actions, amidst rising tensions that could impact existing peace accords in the region.

Israel and the US were right to vote against this. It's a flawed, one-sided resolution.

A two-state solution proposal is not the solution.

more conflict. The root causes aren't addressed.

Another UN resolution doing absolutely nothing to protect Israeli citizens. Disgusting.

I hope that Hamas will take steps in this direction.

The international community is always quick to criticize Israel but silent on Hamas's atrocities.
