Following the assassination of his associate, right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump declined to call for national unity to address the country's divisions. Instead, he focused on blaming "vicious and horrible" radicals on the left.
During a Friday morning interview on Fox & Friends, Trump was asked how he planned to heal the wounds caused by Kirk's shooting. The show's co-host, Ainsley Earhardt, mentioned the presence of radicals on both sides of the political spectrum. Trump responded by stating that the radicals on the right were motivated by a desire to combat crime, while the radicals on the left were the problem, citing their support for policies such as men in women's sports, transgender issues, and open borders.
Trump's response, delivered less than two days after Kirk's shooting, was a striking departure from the typical approach of a US president, especially given the national anger, fear, and mourning surrounding the event.
Historically, US presidents have often used their rhetoric to bridge political divides. Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address, delivered near the end of the Civil War, aimed to heal the nation's wounds and promote unity. More recently, Joe Biden called for unity in his 2021 inaugural address, emphasizing that without it, there would be only bitterness and fury.
Trump's appearance on Fox News demonstrated his lack of intention to follow this tradition. His response to the Kirk shooting was highly partisan and focused on retribution. He threatened George Soros with a RICO investigation and accused him of funding "professional agitators."
In an Oval Office address, Trump indicated he would seek revenge against organizations that support political violence, placing the blame entirely on the "radical left." He has already taken steps to target his political enemies, including authorizing an investigation into the Democratic party's main fundraising channel and threatening to revoke the tax-exempt status of progressive and environmental groups.

I used to have hope for reconciliation, but Trump has proven he only wants to deepen the divide.

Bravo for Trump! This is no time for political correctness; we need honesty about the threats we face.

If we want to heal, we must acknowledge who is really causing the chaos in society.

Trump is always willing to stand up against the unacceptable behavior of the extreme left. We need more of that!
