Indian Men's Compound Archery Team Wins Historic Gold at World Championships 2025

Rishabh Yadav, a member of the Indian men's compound archery team, shared his excitement after the team clinched a historic gold medal at the World Archery Championships 2025 in Gwangju, South Korea. This achievement marks the first time India has secured a gold in the men's compound team event. Rishabh also noted the significance of their silver medal in the mixed team event with Jyothi Surekha Vennam, especially as this event will be featured for the first time in the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. He expressed gratitude for the strong support from the government, the Sports Authority of India, and the Archery Association of India, stating that the players are motivated to further advance towards realizing the Prime Minister's vision of placing in the top ten at the Olympics.

Aman Saini, another teammate, expressed his happiness at this historic win, emphasizing how it serves as a source of motivation and positivity for him and the team. The Indian team, which began as the second seed, demonstrated remarkable resilience in overcoming an initial set deficit against the fifth-seeded French team, ultimately winning 235-233 in a thrilling final match. Their journey to gold involved coming from behind in all four matches they played, showcasing their determination and skill.

In addition to their team victory, Rishabh excelled in the mixed team event alongside Jyothi, who ranked as India's top female compound archer. Together, they achieved victories against several international teams, advancing to the final where they narrowly lost to the Netherlands, finishing with a silver medal. Rishabh's participation in the championships was particularly impressive as it was his debut at the World Championships. Meanwhile, Jyothi's performance was bittersweet; although she earned a silver in the mixed event, her women's team trio's hopes to defend their reigning title ended early in the pre-quarterfinals against Italy.

The competition saw around 500 archers from 74 countries competing for world championship titles, concluding on September 11.

Congratulations to the team! But let's be realistic, archery isn't exactly a mainstream sport in India. Will this even make a difference?
