On Thursday, Japan's Defense Ministry announced that the Self-Defense Forces have visually identified China's latest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, as it navigated through the East China Sea. This marks the first confirmed sighting of China's third aircraft carrier, which is noteworthy for being the first to utilize an electromagnetic catapult system, enhancing its aircraft-launching capabilities.
The ministry's Joint Staff is currently investigating whether the Fujian has formally entered service or if it remains under trial operations. The operational status of the carrier is crucial, as its incorporation into the Chinese naval fleet would have significant implications for regional security, particularly concerning the ongoing tension surrounding Taiwan, which China considers a breakaway province.
According to the reports from the Joint Staff, the Maritime Self-Defense Force observed the Fujian sailing approximately 200 kilometers northwest of the Senkaku Islands, which Japan administers but are also claimed by China, where they are referred to as the Diaoyu Islands. Accompanying the carrier were two missile-equipped destroyers, and it was reported that no carrier-based aircraft were visible as a surveillance plane from the MSDF monitored the movement of the ship toward the Taiwan Strait.
