Japan and Portugal Strengthen Ties Amid Global Security Challenges

In a significant move, the leaders of Japan and Portugal have announced their intention to strengthen their bilateral relations by establishing a "strategic partnership." This decision comes in response to growing global security issues, particularly those stemming from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and escalating tensions worldwide. Following a meeting in Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro underscored the importance of their nations working together, linking Euro-Atlantic security with the stability of the Indo-Pacific region.

In their joint statement, the leaders denounced the military collaboration between Russia and North Korea, highlighting concerns over North Korean troops being deployed to Russia as part of the conflict in Ukraine. They also reaffirmed their historical ties, which date back to 1543, and expressed a commitment to improving bilateral cooperation in areas such as culture, sports, and tourism as they celebrated 480 years of diplomatic relationships in 2023.
