The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) declared a pause in its operations at a women’s food distribution center after receiving credible threats from Hamas. As reported by GHF spokesperson Chapin Fay, the foundation had provided food to approximately 4,000 out of 5,500 Palestinian women when a gathering of military-aged men near the site raised alarms. Initially, a few men were spotted observing the area, but their numbers quickly swelled to several hundred.
Fay noted that reliable sources indicated that Hamas was planning a rush on the site, with concerns raised that operatives might infiltrate the distribution disguised as women. Consequently, GHF decided to suspend women-only distributions across all its sites. Fay lamented that the choice was not one they wished to make but felt compelled due to the threats posed by Hamas, emphasizing that the intimidation endangered the very women they aim to help, who are simply seeking to provide for their children.
Additionally, Fay accused Hamas of disseminating misinformation regarding the operations. With increasing unrest in Gaza, he highlighted the mounting fear among the local population, questioning why Hamas would threaten an essential food supply program. GHF has previously faced violence from Hamas, including a grenade attack on its workers in July.
Fay pointed out a significant uptick in visitors to their distribution sites since the Israel Defense Forces ramped up their military actions in Gaza. This spike has led to confusion among new visitors who are unfamiliar with the GHF's procedures. To combat the ongoing challenges, Fay called for collaboration with international organizations and the United Nations to ensure that aid reaches those who genuinely need it, rather than being diverted by Hamas.
The U.N. has reported that out of 5,511 aid trucks sent to Gaza since May 19, only 938 (roughly 14.5%) made it to their intended locations. Since launching its efforts in May, the GHF has successfully distributed over 161 million meals, including 1 million in just one day according to their records.

We should appreciate GHF's transparency and their decision-making process in light of the threats posed by Hamas.

It’s disappointing to see GHF halt their operations while the people of Gaza are in dire need. They need to stand firm against intimidation.

I commend GHF for being cautious in such a volatile situation! Protecting staff and aid recipients is a top priority.

This just shows the weakness of humanitarian organizations in high-pressure environments. They should adapt, not retreat.

Many organizations would have folded under pressure. GHF's decision to stand down shows true leadership in safeguarding their mission.

Let's not forget the very real threats on the ground. GHF is right to be cautious.

GHF is making it easier for Hamas to control the narrative by suspending aid. They should find ways to work around these threats.

If GHF suspends distributions during such a critical time, what does that say about their commitment? They should take risks for the sake of the people they serve.
