Lawmakers from both Republican and Democratic parties expressed sorrow over the tragic shooting of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, lauded Kirk's faith and his positive influence on young people, stating that he left behind a significant legacy. She emphasized his importance and the excitement he generated among students on college campuses, drawing large crowds to hear him speak. Greene noted that Kirk often encouraged young people to marry, have children, and share their faith. She believes Kirk was targeted for his words and beliefs.
Greene further stated that Kirk was a proponent of debate and never supported violence. She expressed shock and devastation at his murder, describing the video as too graphic.
Democrats also shared their grief. Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, described the situation as awful and expressed his condolences to Kirk's family. He emphasized that political violence has no place in the country and called for greater condemnation of such acts. When asked about the safety of other political figures, Swalwell acknowledged the lack of resources for protection but focused on the tragedy of the situation.
Representative Derrick Van Orden, a Republican from Wisconsin, placed blame for Kirk's death on the media and Democrats, accusing them of fueling political violence. He called for consequences for those making politically violent statements, warning that more deaths could occur. Van Orden asserted that the shooting was preventable and attributed it to violent rhetoric from the left, amplified by the press. He was pressed on whether both sides of the political spectrum share responsibility for the ongoing political violence. He responded by saying that the vast majority of politically violent speech is coming out of the left.

We need to prioritize dialogue and debate over violence. Kirk's efforts to engage young people should be celebrated.”

Blaming the media and Democrats for Kirk’s death is just a cheap shot. Violence is a problem across the board, not just one side.

Swalwell's acknowledgment of the need for better protection shows he's thinking about the safety of all representatives. Respect.

I appreciate both parties coming together to mourn Kirk. It shouldn’t matter that he was conservative; he was a human being.

Kirk encouraged debate and open dialogue, which we need much more of in these polarized times.

This tragedy is a wake-up call for all of us. We need to reject political violence, no matter where it originates.

Greene’s glorification of Kirk feels inappropriate when we should be focusing on the victims and the violence itself.
