Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles did not offer a direct response to President Donald Trump's call for the death penalty against Decarlos Brown Jr., the suspect in the fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska. Trump had demanded a "quick" trial and the death penalty for Brown.
Instead of commenting on Trump's demand, Lyles' office issued a statement emphasizing the importance of transit safety. The statement highlighted the city's partnership with the Federal Transit Authority and its commitment to reviewing how to provide safe service to the community. Lyles expressed a willingness to collaborate with state and federal partners to improve community safety.
Lyles, a Democrat, stated her commitment to finding bipartisan solutions to issues like transit safety. She noted that the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) had implemented several changes since the attack, including increased security on the Blue Line, where the incident occurred. These changes included the deployment of new security teams, such as bike patrols and urban terrain vehicles, and the addition of nearly 30 security personnel.
Following the alleged crime, Brown reportedly told his sister that he had hurt his hand while stabbing the victim. He questioned why anyone would stab someone without a reason and claimed that the "material used in [his] body" was responsible for the crime. His sister later mentioned the victim's origin in Ukraine or Russia and alluded to a "war going on against the United States."
North Carolina maintains the death penalty, but it has been under a de facto moratorium since 2006 due to legal challenges concerning bias and the drugs used in lethal injections.

She is creating real solutions instead of adding fuels to the fire. Leadership!

She's prioritizing community safety and addressing a need in the city, which is a more constructive approach than getting into a political argument.

Bipartisan solutions? There is no middle ground with a killer. She is pandering.

She wisely avoids getting into a political spat. She's focused on making sure people in Charlotte are safe.

improve safety. The death penalty is a federal issue, not her area of jurisdiction.
