The U.S. Naval Academy is currently under lockdown due to an active threat. According to multiple sources, a former midshipman, who had previously been expelled from the institution, returned to the campus armed with a weapon.
Gunshots were reported inside Bancroft Hall, the primary dormitory for midshipmen. One individual was transported from the scene via medical evacuation, and several others were being evaluated for injuries.
Officials on the campus have reported that the individual responsible for the threat is impersonating a military policeman while attempting to gain access to rooms. Naval authorities, including Secretary Phelan, are receiving continuous updates from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the academy's leadership. The lockdown was implemented as a precautionary measure.
Naval Support Activity Annapolis (NSAA), in collaboration with local law enforcement, is responding to the reports of threats. The base is also on lockdown. The Department of Defense is monitoring the situation and has briefed Secretary Hegseth.
A former student expressed concern about the situation, highlighting the close-knit nature of the academy and the feeling of "home" that Bancroft Hall provides to the midshipmen. The hall is home to thousands of individuals. The former student described the building as both a residence and a workplace. Security measures include 24/7 armed guards at security checkpoints and the use of Common Access Card (CAC) readers to control access.

An armed former midshipman?! This raises so many questions about the vetting process.

Why was the lockdown necessary in the first place? It seems to me like a reaction instead of proactive measures.

Impersonating military police? How did this person even get that close to the dorms?
