Former Rapper Turned Mayor in Nepal Emerges as a Youth Symbol Amidst Political Turmoil

The 35-year-old mayor of the capital city, known for his background as a rapper and his dynamic presence on social media, has become a focal point of attention in Nepal. He recently stepped into the limelight after deadly protests resulted in the resignation of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, who is 73 years old. Many supporters on social media, including individual Rewant Adhikari, have urged the mayor, whose public persona includes wearing dark blazers and sunglasses, to run for the position of prime minister, exclaiming "Long live Nepal!"

The protests, organized by "Gen Z Nepal," resulted in 19 fatalities and reflect a significant movement among the country's youth, who represent over half of Nepal's population of 30 million. Balaram K.C., a former Supreme Court judge, indicated that the mayor should be a key youth representative in discussions with President Ram Chandra Poudel about the nation’s future. However, the mayor, popularized by his 2022 election win as an independent candidate, has yet to respond to calls for his political involvement, and attempts to reach him for comments have been unsuccessful.

Known as Balen, the mayor's career foundation in civil engineering complements his role in public service. His rap music, particularly the track "Balidan," has garnered significant views and critiques social issues like corruption and governance. On social media, he has expressed solidarity with the protesters and criticized the previous prime minister as being disconnected from the struggles of the families affected by the unrest.

As discussions unfold among the youth-driven group, Shah's name has emerged as a potential candidate for a Neutral Interim Authority Council that would help navigate the country towards future elections while restoring order. Although he has chosen not to actively participate in the protests—citing a youth demographic much younger than himself—he emphasized the importance of listening to their concerns and preparing for the responsibilities of leadership.

Born in 1990 in Kathmandu, Shah possesses a solid academic background, having studied civil and structural engineering in both Nepal and India. His tenure as mayor is noted for focusing on anti-corruption measures, urban development, and his engaging presence on social media. His efforts include improvements in pedestrian facilities and tightening oversight on private educational institutions, thereby addressing public accountability in education. Youth professionals have also reached out to him, urging for a role as a spokesperson during this transitional phase in Nepal’s political landscape.

We can't afford to have someone who is primarily a social media personality running the country. Leadership requires depth.

His response to the protests has been lackluster. We need a leader who actively engages, not just one who posts online.
