The Singapore Flyer has temporarily ceased operations due to a technical issue discovered during a routine maintenance inspection. Straco Leisure, the attraction's owner, announced the closure on Wednesday, emphasizing it was a precautionary measure. The company is collaborating with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to conduct necessary inspections, repairs, and rectification work.
A spokesperson for the Singapore Flyer confirmed that safety protocols were activated before the start of operations on Wednesday morning. Routine maintenance inspections are conducted daily, both during operating hours and overnight. The BCA indicated that the technical issue involves one of the spoke cables, and a specialist professional engineer will be involved in inspections and testing before rides can resume.
Spoke cables are crucial components, supporting the outer rim of the observation wheel by holding it in compression. The Singapore Flyer has not provided a specific date for the resumption of operations, but the spokesperson stated that they are working diligently to resolve the issue. Operations will resume once all checks and tests are complete.
Customers with existing bookings can contact Straco's customer service team for assistance. Those who booked through third-party platforms should contact their respective booking agents. The public can also find updates on the Singapore Flyer's website and social media pages.
This is not the first time the attraction has faced such issues. In January 2022, operations were suspended due to a technical issue found during a routine inspection. In 2019, a similar incident involving a spoke cable led to the evacuation of 39 people.

It's unfortunate, but necessary. I'd rather they fix it than risk an accident.

Maintenance is essential for any structure, so it's no surprise.

Shouldn't they have these issues sorted by now? It's a major tourist attraction.
