Giulio Pellizzari of Italy secured victory in stage 17 of the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday, breaking away from the leading general classification riders in the final kilometers. The stage concluded with a summit finish at Alto de El Morredero, following a 143.2km route from O Barco de Valdeorras. Pellizzari, representing Red Bull-BORA Hansgrohe, launched his attack with 3.5km remaining, finishing 16 seconds ahead of Tom Pidcock of Britain and Jai Hindley of Australia.
Jonas Vingegaard, the overall leader, crossed the finish line next, gaining two seconds on his closest rival, Joao Almeida. Vingegaard now holds a 50-second lead in the general classification. Pidcock, in third place overall, is almost two and a half minutes behind the leader. Pellizzari, who also wears the white jersey for the best young rider, was among the top general classification contenders, including Vingegaard, Almeida, Pidcock, Hindley, and Matthew Riccitello.
Riccitello expressed frustration after the race, stating that he felt the other riders should have pursued the stage win more aggressively. An early breakaway of 12 riders was eventually caught before the final climb, setting the stage for the main general classification contenders to battle for the stage victory. Almeida appeared to struggle at one point but managed to rejoin Vingegaard, suggesting a potential duel for the overall win.
Pidcock, aiming to maintain his third-place position, sprinted for the finish line, securing bonus seconds over Hindley. He acknowledged the strategic sacrifice of potentially winning the stage in favor of securing a podium finish.
Prior to the stage, riders had agreed to neutralize the race if pro-Palestinian protests disrupted it again, following disruptions in previous stages. Strong winds at the summit finish were also a concern, but the riders were able to complete the stage. Protests were present in Ponferrada, but police maintained control. The area surrounding the finishing climb was marked by the aftermath of recent wildfires. The upcoming stage 18, a 27.2km individual time trial in Valladolid, could be another point of contention for protests.

Kudos to Pidcock for knowing when to play it smart! Sometimes, securing a podium is more valuable than a stage win.

I loved the strategic gameplay! It adds another layer to the race, and Pellizzari’s tactics paid off beautifully.

What a letdown! Pellizzari's win feels overshadowed by the chaos surrounding the race. It’s hard to focus on the sport when controversy looms.

Almeida struggling shows that the pressure is getting to everyone. Is it too much to ask for a race free from external chaos?
