The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission announced on Wednesday that Malaysia has successfully recovered US$8.57 million in assets connected to Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, and his family. These assets are linked to the ongoing investigation into the multi-billion dollar 1MDB scandal.
This recent recovery, combined with the recent US$330 million settlement reached with JPMorgan Chase, has significantly increased the total amount of assets recovered by Malaysia in the 1MDB case. The total recovered assets now amount to RM31.19 billion, which is equivalent to US$7.40 billion.
Investigations by both Malaysian and US authorities have revealed that at least US$4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB between 2009 and 2014. The stolen funds were allegedly channeled through a complex, international scheme, with some of the money transferred to offshore bank accounts and shell companies associated with Jho Low.
Jho Low played a role in assisting former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in establishing 1MDB, which was intended to promote economic development. Najib Razak was subsequently convicted in 2022 on charges related to 1MDB-linked corruption and money laundering, leading to his imprisonment.

Recovering these assets is just a drop in the bucket compared to the total stolen. What’s the point?
