On Wednesday, September 10th, right-wing activist and commentator Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck during an event at a Utah university. The incident, which Utah's governor described as a political assassination, occurred while Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Initial reports regarding the suspect's status were conflicting. FBI Director Kash Patel indicated on social media that a suspect was in custody, but minutes later, a press conference with an FBI agent and Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason stated the suspect was still at large.
Former President Donald Trump expressed his grief on social media, writing that Kirk was greatly admired and understood the youth of America. Cellphone videos of the event show Kirk, 31, addressing a large crowd when a sound resembling a gunshot was heard. Kirk was seen grabbing his neck and falling from his chair, prompting attendees to flee.
The shooting is part of a concerning trend of political violence in the United States. Governor Spencer Cox called it a dark and tragic day, explicitly labeling the event a political assassination.
Kirk's appearance was the first stop on a planned 15-event American Comeback Tour at universities. He frequently used these events to engage in live debates with attendees. Videos show that just before the shooting, Kirk was being questioned about gun violence. Police have not yet released any information about a possible suspect.

The fact that Kirk was speaking about violence just before this happened seems incredibly convenient.

Wow. Unbelievable. What has become of us? We need more dialogue, not bullets!

I'm not a fan of Kirk, but violence is never the answer. I hope the shooter is caught and justice is served.

I'm reserving judgment. The details seem too simplistic to me.

This whole thing feels staged. I'm skeptical

This shooting should be a wake-up call. We need less hate and more understanding.

My heart goes out to Charlie Kirk and his family. This is what happens when political rhetoric gets too extreme.
