On Wednesday, Poland intercepted suspected Russian drones within its airspace, supported by aircraft from its NATO allies. This marked the first instance where a member of the Western military alliance is known to have engaged in direct action during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed parliament, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. He described it as the closest the nation has come to open conflict since World War II, while also emphasizing that there was no indication of an impending war.
The operation involved a coordinated effort. Polish F-16 fighter jets, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS surveillance planes, and NATO mid-air refuelling aircraft were deployed to intercept the drones. The incursions began on Tuesday evening and continued into the morning hours.
One of the drones impacted a residential property in the eastern Polish village of Wyryki-Wola. The drone struck the two-story brick house of Tomasz Wesolowski, a pensioner, at approximately 6:30 am local time. The impact caused significant damage, destroying the roof and scattering debris throughout the bedroom. Wesolowski stated that the house would need to be demolished. Further evidence of the drone activity was found in a field in southeastern Poland, where the remains of other drones were discovered.

The response was proportionate and necessary. Protecting the border of Poland is a MUST.

It's a strong action that also shows control and caution. A good combination.

This is just going to make things worse. More fighting isn't the answer.

The response has been measured, but this is a very dangerous moment.
