Poland convened urgent talks with its NATO allies on Wednesday following the intrusion of Russian drones into Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine. Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed concern that the situation was escalating towards "open conflict."
According to Tusk, Polish airspace was violated nineteen times. While jets were scrambled, at least three drones were successfully shot down. Authorities reported no injuries resulting from the incident. Local media shared footage of firefighters and police examining a house in the village of Wyryki, eastern Poland, which had sustained damage from a drone impact.
This marks a significant escalation, as Russian drones and missiles have previously entered the airspace of NATO members, including Poland, during the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, this is the first instance of a NATO country attempting to shoot them down. Tusk invoked NATO's Article 4, a measure allowing any member to call for urgent talks when they perceive a threat to their "territorial integrity, political independence or security." This is only the eighth time this measure has been utilized.
Tusk addressed parliament, stating that the situation brought them closer to open conflict than at any point since World War II. However, he also clarified that there was no current justification to declare a state of war. The incident occurred amidst a wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine, including in Lviv, a city near the Polish border.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the airspace violation as a "dangerous precedent" for Europe, calling it "no accident" and urging a strong response from Ukraine's Western allies. Poland's interior ministry reported damage to a house and a car, and the discovery of seven drones and debris from an unidentified projectile.
The North Atlantic Council, NATO's primary decision-making body, altered its weekly meeting to address the situation under Article 4 of the treaty. The alliance operates on the principle that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. NATO chief Mark Rutte praised the organization's "very successful reaction," highlighting the effectiveness of its air defenses. He condemned Moscow's "reckless behaviour" and urged Putin to cease the war, which he said was now targeting civilians.
Russia's defense ministry denied targeting Poland, expressing their willingness to engage in discussions with Warsaw. They did not confirm or deny that their drones had entered Polish airspace.

War is not the answer. Enough is enough. Sanctions are meant to be a strategy. When will diplomacy work?

Tusk is stirring the pot. The media loves to sensationalize everything. Nine days! Are they serious?

Glad to see Poland take this seriously. Sooner or later, there is always going to be a situation of conflict.

The world has never seen an aggressor like Russia. This is a war of pure greed and destruction of human life.

Mark Rutte is correct. This proves Russian actions need to stop!
