Eliud Kipchoge, a former world record holder, and Sifan Hassan, an Olympic champion, are set to make their debut at the New York City Marathon in November, according to the New York Road Runners.
The announcement follows their participation in the Sydney Marathon last month. The Sydney Marathon, a 25-year-old race, was recently added to the World Marathon Majors series. Hassan secured victory in Sydney with a time of two hours, 18 minutes, and 22 seconds.
Hassan, who holds the third-fastest time ever recorded by a woman in the marathon, previously placed third in London earlier this year, finishing in 2:19:00.
Kipchoge, aged 40 and a champion at both the Rio and Tokyo Olympics, has not won a marathon since his 11th major triumph in Berlin two years ago. In 2019, he achieved the historic feat of running a marathon in under two hours. This accomplishment, though not officially recognized as a record due to non-compliance with World Athletics rules, was widely celebrated. New York is the only marathon major that Kipchoge has yet to compete in.
The upcoming race will also feature defending champions Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya, along with past winners Albert Korir and Evans Chebet, also from Kenya.

They should give a chance to new runners instead of constantly spotlighting the same few faces.

The NYC Marathon is lucky to have these two — it wouldn't be the same without them!

The NYC marathon has become more about hype than real competition with all this celebrity participation.
