Sir Keir Starmer's recent efforts to reshape his leadership have encountered a setback with the departure of a key aide. Tom Kibasi, a strategist seconded from NHS England, was expected to serve in Downing Street for several months. However, after only two weeks, the 43-year-old has returned to his previous position. A Downing Street official attributed the early exit to the completion of a short-term project.
This development adds to the challenges facing the Prime Minister's attempts to reset his premiership. The reshuffle was initiated amidst turmoil, triggered by the resignation of Angela Rayner from her roles as deputy prime minister, housing secretary, and deputy Labour leader. This followed an ethics investigation concerning her underpayment of stamp duty.
The reshuffle itself involved the dismissal of two ministers, the promotion of two others, and the reassignment of ten individuals. Sir Keir now faces the prospect of a party conference potentially overshadowed by the competition for the deputy leadership position. This role was previously held by the Ashton-under-Lyne MP, who enjoyed considerable support within the party and was viewed as a link between the leadership and the broader membership. The reshuffle also followed a smaller shake-up of the Downing Street team, marking the beginning of what the government termed "phase two.

With the party conference coming up, this just makes Starmer look desperate and unprepared.

The divisions in the party are widening, and Starmer doesn’t seem to have a clue how to fix it.

It’s refreshing to see Starmer making bold moves. Not all reshuffles will go perfectly.
