Runners Receive Sunderland Map, Sparking Confusion and Apologies

The recent Great North Run saw a significant error on the commemorative medals given to participants. The event, which involved 60,000 runners completing a 13.1-mile course, intended to honor their achievement with a medal featuring a map of the route. However, the map displayed on the medals incorrectly depicted Sunderland, complete with the River Wear, instead of the intended route through Newcastle, Gateshead, and South Shields. This error was also present on related merchandise, such as t-shirts.

The mistake quickly became apparent to many runners, leading to widespread bewilderment and amusement on social media. Participants expressed surprise at how such a significant error could have gone unnoticed before the event. Some Sunderland supporters humorously pointed out the appearance of the Stadium of Light on the medal. Many runners expressed disappointment, highlighting the irony of receiving a medal representing a different city after completing the half marathon.

The Great Run Company has since issued an apology for the error. They acknowledged the mistake, explaining that the river depicted was indeed the River Wear. They clarified that the error was unintentional and that the designs had been reviewed by multiple people without the mistake being detected. The company humorously noted the presence of Newcastle United stars at the start line and the Stadium of Light on the medal, suggesting that the event had become an even greater celebration of the region than intended. They also stated that the unique medal and t-shirt would become a memorable keepsake. Sir Brendan Foster, a prominent figure in the event, also admitted to not noticing the error. He expressed pride in the event and looked forward to the 2026 run.
