Fallout from Harry and Meghan's Jamaican Appearance

Reports indicate that King Charles had an urgent phone conversation with Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness following a public appearance by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Kingston last year. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were photographed with the Prime Minister at the premiere of the film "One Love" in January 2024.

The couple's attendance at the premiere was initially attributed to an invitation from the Prime Minister. However, it was later revealed that they were likely invited by Brian Robbins, the CEO of Paramount, and his wife, Tracy James, who are friends and neighbors of the couple. This initial misattribution caused concern.

According to Theresa Roberts, Jamaica’s Ambassador/Special Investment Envoy for Culture and Arts in the United Kingdom, the situation caused a degree of panic within the Royal Family. She stated that the Prime Minister was concerned that the photograph could be interpreted as a political statement. He quickly sought to clarify the situation with the King.

Roberts explained that the Jamaican government was displeased with the premiere's outcome. The Prime Minister, who was photographed with the couple, became the focus of criticism. He was accused of being overly friendly with Harry and Meghan, despite not being the one who invited them. The Prime Minister's focus is on domestic affairs and he did not anticipate the negative reaction.

Roberts further stated that efforts were made to assure King Charles that the Prime Minister was not attempting to align himself with Harry. The King, who is the head of state in Jamaica, reportedly expressed that he did not expect to be involved in the situation.
