A large-scale immigration enforcement operation took place in southeast Texas, resulting in the arrest of over 800 illegal immigrants, according to information shared by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This operation, which unfolded from August 17 to August 23, aimed at improving public safety in a region affected by the perceived consequences of former President Joe Biden's open-border policies.
The operation culminated in the arrest of 822 individuals, with five identified as transnational gang members, seven as child predators, and three as convicted criminals related to homicide offenses. Notably, 330 of those apprehended had prior removal orders from the United States, while around 112 had been previously deported and unlawfully reentered the country.
Gabriel Martinez, the acting Field Office Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, highlighted that over the last four years, many serious offenders exploited the challenges at the southern border to gain entry into the U.S. He expressed concern that these individuals posed a threat to local communities, as many remained in the Houston area.
Among the arrests, Mexican national Alejandro Perez Miramontes stood out as he has faced deportation 12 times and has numerous convictions for illegal reentry and other crimes. Another troubling case involved Salvadoran national William Alexander Telles Amaya, a habitual child predator with several convictions for child sex offenses.
The operation also included the arrest of other individuals with serious records involving sexual offenses against minors, such as Francisco Eduardo Bonilla and Jorge Eliseo Torres-Soto. Similarly, Manuel Ivan Castillo Estrada was taken into custody after multiple deportations and a conviction for sexually assaulting a minor.
In addition, Zimbabwean national Lloyd Tinashe Hwehwe and Salvadoran child sex offender Carlos Vega-Ramirez were among those arrested, both having histories of serious offenses and illegal reentry. Hemerlindo Antonio Ascencio-Merino, another Salvadoran national, was apprehended as he was wanted for aggravated homicide in El Salvador after attempting to escape justice by entering the U.S.
Cruz Leandro Martinez Leiva, a 25-year-old MS-13 gang member, was also arrested during the operation, which was part of the Trump administration's broader strategy to enhance public safety by targeting the most dangerous criminal aliens. The collaborative effort involved various federal agencies and the Texas Department of Public Safety. A spokesperson for the Biden administration has yet to provide a comment on the operation.

This enforcement operation feels more like a political stunt than a genuine effort to improve safety.

This operation is using fear tactics to gain political points rather than truly protecting communities.

I support any effort to remove individuals who have repeatedly broken our laws, especially violent offenders.

This operation should be the standard, focusing on keeping our streets safe from repeat offenders.
