A significant federal raid in upstate New York has resulted in the apprehension of 57 undocumented workers, among whom five individuals are now facing criminal charges for reentering the U.S. after being deported. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York has identified these five individuals as Alex Ben Chipin, Argentina Juarez-Lopez, Luis Jom-Morales, Gregorio Baldemar Ramirez-Perez, all from Guatemala, and Francisco Salvardo-Mora from Mexico. The remainder of the detained immigrants, numbering 52, will remain in custody while their immigration cases are processed.
Acting U.S. Attorney John Sarcone III remarked that this raid, conducted on September 4 in Cayuga County, represents one of the largest enforcement actions targeting workplaces in recent times. He emphasized the consequences for employers in the Northern District of New York who hire unauthorized workers, warning that they could face criminal investigations. Sarcone stressed the need for jobs in upstate and central New York, especially in Cayuga County where unemployment remains a concern, underscoring that these positions should be filled by those legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Meanwhile, Erin Keegan, the special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Buffalo, reiterated the agency’s commitment to exposing potentially harmful business practices. In her statement, she insisted that HSI is dedicated to protecting worker rights and upholding U.S. laws, which entails addressing workplace exploitation, ensuring compliance with labor and immigration regulations, and maintaining the integrity of the country’s workforce. The criminal charges against the five defendants carry serious penalties, including a maximum prison sentence of two years, hefty fines, and supervised release.

Employers should be prosecuted too! If they didn't hire undocumented workers, there wouldn't be a problem. Targeting the workers is easy.

Finally, some action against those who break our immigration laws! We need to uphold the rule of law.

Security and proper job allocation should be a top priority. This raid helps maintain that balance.

It's shameful that the government chooses to target the most vulnerable. These raids only tear families apart.

This raid is just another example of government overreach. These workers are just trying to provide for their families.

Good to see law enforcement taking steps to protect the jobs of legal workers. We need to support our own first!
