Manhunt Underway for Ex-Con Suspected in Double Homicide in Queens

New York City police have initiated a manhunt for Jamel McGriff, a 42-year-old ex-con suspected of murdering a couple in their home in Queens. The victims, Frank and Maureen Olton, aged 76 and 77, were discovered in their residence located in Bellerose, near the renowned Belmont Park racetrack. Authorities found both individuals severely burned, with the male victim additionally showing signs of having been stabbed and restrained in the basement.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch labeled McGriff as "armed and dangerous," urging the public to assist in locating him. McGriff has a long criminal history, including a 16-year incarceration for previous robbery offenses and he was currently on parole. Notably, he had failed to register as a sex offender last year, an oversight that authorities believe should have resulted in a return to prison.

The suspect was reportedly seen on surveillance footage wearing dark clothing, including a black hat and jacket. Prior to the murders, he had attempted to enter another home under the guise of needing phone charging assistance, but was turned away. Subsequently, he managed to talk his way into the Oltons' home, where he allegedly remained for about five hours before fleeing with stolen belongings, after which flames engulfed the house.

The fire prompted the son of the victims, an EMT with the FDNY, to call for help after an alarm system alerted him to the situation. Eyewitnesses conveyed their shock at the tragedy, noting the victim's long-time residency and involvement in the community. Local residents described McGriff’s modus operandi as a distraction robbery, suggesting he utilized deceptive tactics to gain access to victims' homes.

The investigation continues actively, with officials reminding citizens to remain vigilant and cautious about allowing strangers into their homes. Ultimately, the severity of this incident has deeply affected the neighborhood, now grappling with the consequences of violence lurking nearby. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline.

Another example of the breakdown of law and order. When will it end?

Great job to the FDNY; it is shocking and I am sure it will be resolved.
