Former President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Elizabeth Tsurkov, a Princeton University doctoral student, had been released by Kata'ib Hezbollah. This group, backed by Iran, is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.
Tsurkov, who holds dual citizenship in Russia and Israel, was described by Trump as "just released" and now safe within the American Embassy in Iraq. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated his commitment to justice and urged Hamas to release the hostages.
Tsurkov was abducted in Baghdad in 2023 while conducting research for her dissertation. She had traveled to Iraq alone, using her Russian passport. Trump's post also mentioned that Tsurkov had been "tortured for many months." Her current condition has not been disclosed.
Prior to her abduction, Tsurkov, who is also associated with Washington’s New Lines Institute, was recognized as an expert on regional affairs and frequently appeared in international media. The U.S. government had previously held Iraq responsible for her safety and well-being.

Trump’s announcement feels more like a political stunt than a genuine concern for Tsurkov's well-being.

Let’s unite in support of her and all those like her who are making sacrifices for knowledge in conflict zones.

Big ups to former President Trump for taking a stand and advocating for hostages. It's a tough situation.

Trump’s framing of the situation lacks nuance and simply oversimplifies a much more complex issue.

Let’s not forget that Tsurkov was in a dangerous place doing research. This wouldn't have happened if proper precautions were taken.
